Do Or Do Not. There Is No Try – Yoda Puppeteering Documentary

do or do not

After the success of his Return Of The Jedi Filmumentary short (has he coined a unique term for these shorter form docs yet?) “Slimy Piece Of Worm-Ridden Filth” on the puppeteering of Jabba The Hutt, Jamie Benning has turned his attention to Yoda.

Dave Barclay was chief puppeteer on Jabba The Hutt. He was 19 years old when he worked on building and operating the Yoda puppet on The Empire Strikes Back. So impressed he was with Jamie’s Jabba doc (!), he persuaded him to do a short on Yoda, interviewing him on the process.

Jamie wanted to shake up the film-making process this time with a more interesting location. Inspiration struck when he recalled London’s famous Madame Tussauds is hosting an ongoing Star Wars exhibit. They graciously agreed to Jamie and Dave filming amongst the characters.

“Dave and I chatted about his puppeteering parents, his beginnings in the film industry, his experiences on set with Yoda and Mark Hamill. His lead puppeteering of Jabba in ROTJ and his career beyond Star Wars,” Jamie states in his introduction on his Vimeo page. “Dave has been involved in so many seminal films. Films that were not only entertaining to us as kids (and still are as adults) but films that led the way in his industry.

So, here is “Dave Barclay. Do or do not. There is no try”. I hope you enjoy it.”
