Did you know that the harassed tourist father at the beginning of Tim Burton’s Batman is Garrick Hagon, AKA Luke Skywalker’s Tattooine best bud, Biggs? We only discovered this recently. Attempts to contact Mr Hagon for our #89Batweek celebrations were unsuccessful, but fortunately Batmanonline interviewed him back in 2009. You can read the full (short) interview via the link.
Garrick was living and working in London at the time, along with quite a few other American actors. He auditioned for Tim Burton and, as a result of showing the director his recent holiday snaps, his wife Liza Ross played his onscreen wife, who gets a gun waved in her face. Their boy sadly couldn’t play their movie son, as he had developed a British accent.
Garrick and his screen family filmed for two days, “the most exciting being the long night shoot of the fantastically atmospheric opening scene.” Garrick recalled it was the most realistic set he’d ever had the pleasure of working on. After much nagging, he got to keep his character’s hat as a souvenir.
