Silent Running: Vintage Making Of Documentary

I’m a sucker for “making of “features, which are sadly becoming more of an afterthought on the latest film disc releases. Quite often they are chopped up into bite sized chunks, more often back-slapping talking heads with little insight, compared to the mammoth features of a few years ago. Of course there are exceptions, though usually on the inevitable “special editions”, after we’ve shelled out already.

That’s why it’s a delight to share the excellent, candid feature length “making of” documentary from the Masters of Cinema Blu ray release of Silent Running, now posted in its unbroken form on YouTube.  Many thanks to LoSceicco1976 for posting it on Twitter. Here writer and first time director Douglas Trumbull, famous now for his pioneering special effects work and advances in cinematography, guides us through every aspect of the making of his sci-fi parable, with great insights from star Bruce Dern (Freeman Lowell), and the actors who inhabit the Drone robot costumes.
