Star Wars The Force Awakens Sounds Supercut

Star Wars The Force Awakens didn’t disappoint when it came to sound editing and design – as well as the familiar “Pew ! pew!” blaster fire and Mouse droids, a whole host of other, new, auditory phrasings laid open a world both old and new, to delight, excite and enchant audiences in a Galaxy far, far away.

Sterling work from a whole host of people – like Matthew Wood, Supervising Sound designer, Gary Rydstrom and Matt Wood, David Acord, Supervising Sound Editor and Sound Designer, Stuart Wilson, Supervising and Sound Mixer, to name a few.

Kylo Ren’s “Force rumble” is David Acord’s cat purring. The Rathtat slobbering over the Millenium Falcon’s cockpit is Acord, choking on  his own finger down his throat, lower pitched. He told

“I think the most obvious new sound effect in the movie is Kylo’s lightsaber. We were attempting, along with his Force power effect, to create sound effects that would mimic his persona, which is this raw power he has that’s not quite formed. He’s not well trained, but he’s extremely powerful. It’s a little wild and dangerous. The sword itself, the look of the sword has the extra darts coming out the side, and it’s really sparky and wavery and it looks a little homemade. The idea of the sound was to match that–something that sounds like raw energy, just pure power, very brutal and kind of wild and dangerous sounding.”

Rey’s Force channeling sound by contrast is more “a calming sound that was similar to a rhythmic heart.” To show Finn’s trooper is different from his cohorts before we get to know him unmasked, the sound track was taken down to just his breathing with music.

Wood worked closely with Adam Driver on how his voice sounded through Kylo Ren’s mask:

“I was able to work with Adam Driver really directly and build the process for how his voice was going to sound in that mask. We built [it] in sound design and actually took it to Adam and got him to play with it. He could hear the process of his voice through the mask as he was doing it live, so we could use it like an instrument and play on it. So you could get these really creepy performances of him playing a very intimate recording right up on the mic. And yet it has this distorted, otherworldly feel through the mask, so it still keeps [dialog] intelligible. That mask’s sole function is to intimidate. It’s not keeping him alive like it [was for] Darth Vader; it’s just a mask of intimidation. We really wanted to work with that.”
