The Elstree Project: An Oral History Of Movie Magic

the elstree project

Elstree Studios just outside London – close your eyes and the list of iconic films made on those sound stages raises goosebumps. From Star Wars to Superman, Indiana Jones to The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and more recently, The King’s Speech to Kick Ass. Not to mention classic television shows and more current fare, from Danger Man to ‘Allo ‘Allo, The Avengers to The Muppet Show, and currently Holby City.

It wasn’t always this way. Sadly, the studios closed for a time during the 1990’s. As film-making has resumed on the site (albeit in a reduced capacity –  half the original site is now a supermarket!) and it rapidly approaches its Centenary (the Neptune Film Company opened the first studios in Borehamwood in 1914), the many unknown stories behind the productions to have graced its stages, prop stores and dressing rooms have been in danger of being lost to time. That is, until The Elstree project stepped up to the plate, or should I say, slate.

The Elstree Project is an on-going oral history project, created in partnership between Howard Berry of the University of Hertfordshire’s Film and Television degree course and Bob Redman and Paul Welsh MBE of volunteer group Elstree Screen Heritage. Since September 2010, veterans of major film and TV productions have been interviewed about their careers and life in the film industry. Volunteers, often using borrowed equipment at necessarily short notice, have begun an ambitious programme to interview on film many of these veterans, to record their varied and fascinating tales of the life of a vibrant, important landmark in British and International film and television history.

The Elstree Project doesn’t just want the fluff pieces you normally hear. They interview the prop painters, the riggers, the cameramen. 32 in depth, highly regarded professional interviews have already been filmed. They aim to complete 50 by 2014, and that’s where you can help. You can pledge to support the project via kickstarter. ,follow on twitter and visit the website here .
